In 2008, Basics Architects started a project to construct new buildings for DBDS Shriram School in Kota, a CSR initiative by DCM Group of Education. The school, initially a small primary institution, was transformed to better serve the local community. The project involved dismantling old buildings and constructing new ones to improve functionality and circulation.
Read MoreThe design focused on sustainable educational architecture, considering Kota’s hot and humid climate. The new buildings feature large courtyards, semi-covered patios, and open corridors, ensuring natural ventilation and lighting. Facilities like air-conditioning and unnecessary cladding were omitted to keep things simple and reduce maintenance costs. Local construction methods and materials were used, creating structures that fit well with the local area.
The construction aimed to create a flexible and adaptive learning environment. Classrooms were designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. The central corridor, lit by skylights and clerestory windows, opens into a shaded courtyard, providing a comfortable space for students. Using local stone for cladding and innovative solutions like half-shaped slab off-cuts helped reduce costs and waste, showing the team’s commitment to eco-friendly school design.
This project shows Basics Architects’ dedication to sustainable and functional design, making a positive impact on the local community.
